"Christian Action Front was founded in 1972
by Michael Foster, Graham Timmins, David Shepherd and Roger Leitch. It resulted from
a shared desire to evangelise amongst the teenagers of the town of Rugby".
The history
described in the article does not fully match with my memories of what happened and
some of the language used indicates some of the feelings around the time.
The office
we had was an old laundry room in the outbuildings behind a large run down almost
cathedral size Methodist church. 30 - 50 people rattled around a church built for
1500.
I recall removing the old copper clothes boiler and painting this room, which
was next to the gents toilets.
However it served us well as a base for going out
around the town talking to people. A highlight was getting the concession to sell
the programs for a month long Rugby festival. We were able to put a christian leaflet
or card in every program and have a christian book stall at most events.
I think
I dropped out of CAF sometime after I left the Methodists and joined Rugby Chapel
Fellowship.
Rugby Chapel Fellowship was a charismatic house church which outgrew a house.
It
was not unlike many house churches that have since formed alongside the mainstream
churches, many of whom have now embraced the baptism of the Holy Spirit - the issue
that divided people at that time.
It was in no way a cult, but to the established
churches at the time who lost people to RCF, I could understand them seeing it that
way. (I recall there was a long history of divisions and splinters in church groups
in Rugby, while this may sound bad, the net result was church growth).
The positive
thing about that article is that the people concerned did have a heart for evangelism
and many still do.
I left Rugby and RCF to work in Shirley, Solihull.
I have since heard from some ex
RCF people and it is good to know that most of the core group are still going strong.
Pete and Gill - who were also part of the leadership team have a son Andy who went
to the same bible college as Sarah.
We get a newsletter from Dave and Ingrid and
some others are active in St Mathews Rugby and Bilton Evangelical.
